Packing tips

When you’re ready to begin, remember to pack one room at a time.

Label each box so you know what it contains, and which room it belongs in.

Clearly mark “Fragile” on boxes containing delicate items.

When taping up boxes, ensure that they close properly. Boxes that sag underneath are likely to break open, and that’s a problem you don’t need. As a guide, don’t pack more than 20 kg into each box.

Use unpainted newsprint paper to wrap glassware and china. Make sure there are two or three sheets of paper between each item. Stand plates and glasses the same way you would in the dishwasher. This will prevent breakages. Label boxes containing these items with “Fragile Glass”.

Heavier items should be packed at the bottom of each box, with lighter items on top.

Keep boxes together that contain items from the same room.

Damage to fragile, plastic, and electrical goods can be prevented by using soft clothing and bedding as padding in boxes.

Keep clothing in dresser drawers.

Re-use the boxes that originally contained electronic equipment, especially your TV and computer hardware. Protect your electrical goods with bubble wrap or polystyrene.

Pack medicines in a leak-proof container.

Label boxes containing essential items with “Last In, First Out”.

If you take apart any furniture, store the nuts and bolts or screws in a plastic bag taped beneath the furniture. Avoid taping directly onto polished or painted wood finishes. Tape can damage these surfaces.

Keep the tools you need to reassemble your furniture separately and take them in the car with you.

Don’t pack your important documents. Take these with you in your car.

Keep pillows and cushions separate and easy to get at. These can be used to pad delicate electronic items such as your TV, stereo, and computer.
